WIP is an artist-led, work-in-progress performance platform co-founded by dance artists Kate Wallich, Stephanie Zaletel, and Belize Wilheim. Launched in 2023, WIP was created to give choreographers and performance makers a “low-tech, high-visibility” space to share evolving works with audiences, fostering curiosity, dialogue, and critical exchange at every stage of development.
WIP’s mission is to provide a supportive environment for artists to develop ideas, receive meaningful feedback, and catalyze experimentation within the Los Angeles dance and performance community. By centering progressive work in active development, WIP strengthens the local choreographic ecosystem by deepening connections between artists, arts institutions, and audiences.
The format is simple: each WIP features two artists sharing up to 25 minutes of work-in-progress, followed by a moderated post-show conversation. Each artist receives 10 hours of free rehearsal space in advance of their showing. Admission is free with RSVP, and our cash bar supports the guaranteed artist fees.
Since 2023, WIP has presented 44 artists and groups across 22 programs, offered more than 500 hours of free rehearsal space, welcomed over 1,000 audience members, and launched its first fundraiser, PROM. WIP continues to grow as a vital platform for artistic development and community gathering, a space where process and development are celebrated, and where dance can thrive in conversation. WIP artists have gone on to premiere full works at institutions like MOCA, UCLA, RECAT, American Dance Festival, and New York Live Arts, among others. WIP believes in time, care, infrastructure, and consistency as the foundation of a thriving artistic landscape.
